The men continued the displacement of topsoil into piles close to the parking lot. The reason why this soil cannot be used directly to fill in the gully is that it settles too much over time if not spread to dry. The scraper (a large machine that does what its name implies) was used for the first time this morning.

Actually, the topsoil cannot be used in the fill because of the organic material that it contains. Besides excessive compression it will not bond with the other materials and acts as a lubricant which can lead to slippage problems. There was a problem with soils being too wet to use directly until they were spread out to dry.
